Boost your immunity this winter

Flu and covid 19 vaccination booster

This week, the NHS launched its national campaign encouraging the population to ‘Boost your immunity this winter’ and get the Flu and Covid Booster vaccinations.

The campaign will run across TV, radio and you will notice a series of eye-catching images across all of our online social media and beyond.

So with the campaign launched, there isn’t a better time for you to consider the vaccinations you need to protect you this winter.

It has never been more important to ensure we are protected against flu and COVID-19, than it is this year.

Within NCL, we are continuing to roll out our flu and COVID-19 booster programme, and the London region continues to lead the way nationally in the number of booster doses administered. To date within NCL we have vaccinated around half of our eligible population with booster doses, but we still need to do more to ensure our family members, friends, neighbors, colleagues and local communities are protected against these viruses.

Unfortunately COVID-19 has not disappeared, and cases are once again on the rise as we approach winter, particularly as we huddle up together indoors in closed spaces. However, unlike this time last year we now have an efficient, safe and effective vaccination programme that is our first line of defence against this virus. We know vaccines give high levels of protection, though immunity naturally reduces over time, so it is vital for you, if you are eligible, to come forward to get your COVID-19 booster vaccine to top-up your defences and protect yourself and your family members this winter.

You will be invited to get your COVID-19 booster jab if you are:

  • Over 50
  • A frontline health and social care worker
  • An older adult in a residential care home
  • Aged 16-49 with an underlying health condition which puts you at greater risk of severe COVID
  • An adult sharing a home with vulnerable people

If you have not been contacted within a week of reaching six months since your second jab and you fall into one of the above categories, you can either call 119, book yourself an appointment online via the National Booking System or attend one of our friendly walk-in clinics.

The offer of a first and second COVID-19 vaccine also remains open to those eligible, and if you have a child who is aged between 12-15, we are now offering them first jabs on the National Booking Service too.

Finally, we cannot forget about the importance of getting your flu vaccine. This year will see the country’s biggest flu programme in history with 35 million people eligible for a free vaccine nationwide, and we would strongly encourage you to book your flu vaccines alongside your COVID-19 jabs to give you the best possible protection as we move into the traditional cold and flu season that is winter. Those who are eligible for a free flu vaccine can book an appointment through their GP surgery or local pharmacy.

Those eligible for the free vaccine are:

  • all children aged 2 to 15 (but not 16 years or older) on 31 August 2021
  • those aged 6 months to under 50 years in clinical risk groups
  • pregnant women
  • those aged 50 years and over
  • those in long-stay residential care homes
  • carers
  • close contacts of immunocompromised individuals
  • some frontline health and social care staff
